When a new post is created and added to an author, should the author’s record be updated with the post? I’m seeing that this isn’t happening. Does this have to be manually created on both sides?

Do you mean Created by record under Info tab? It should be updated just the time you create an entry. It should show author’s username.
Also, if you mean that entry doesn’t appear at the top of entries’ list (in Content tab), then you might need to change the sorting order (click Updated column to change the order) and check if content type of just created entry is chosen in Content type drop-down near search bar.
